Hujierste Fm

Period:
Devonian

Age Interval:
D2 (1), Middle Devonian

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

Northwest Junggar. The type section is located at south slope of Sharburtishan Mt. It was named by the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences and Xinjiang Team of Regional Geological Survey in 1973, and Hou Hongfei et al. quoted it formally in 1979.

Lithology and Thickness

Tuffaceous sandstone. At the outcropping strata in Mangkelu gully at south slope of Sharbutishan Mt., the Lower part of this formation is composed of tuffaceous sandy conglomerate, sandstone and conglomerate, intercalated with andesitic porphyrite and limestone lenses.

The Upper part consists of grayish-green to dark-gray siltstone and tuffaceous sandstone, intercalated with black carbonate shale, partly with coal beds. The outcropping thickness is 438 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Coarse-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Lower part of this formation is probably a kind of melange accumulation, and the contact relations of its top and bottom with other units are unclear. The next older regional unit is the Mangkelu Fm. [NOTE: One Lexicon chart shows an intervening "Hefeng Fm", but this was not mentioned in English Lexicon text.]

Upper contact

Faulted contact with the overlying Zhulumute Fm
